The Government is proposing to bring forward a total ban on the finning of dead sharks by two years in response to widespread public concern about the gruesome practice.
Conservation Minister Nick Smith originally planned to ban finning of all shark species, except blue sharks, by October 2015.
The ban on removing blue sharks' fins would have begun in October 2016.
This led to an outcry by conservation groups because blue shark was the species most affected by the finning practice.

En elk jaar nemen miljoenen Europeanen aan vrijwillige acties deel om hun buurt op te ruimen. Het initiatief "Let's Clean up Europe" wil meer van die acties stimuleren, de burgers bewuster maken van de omvang van het afvalprobleem en een aanpassing van hun gedrag aanmoedigen. Het wordt gecoördineerd door de Europese week van de afvalvermindering (EWAV).

Ogni anno milioni di tonnellate di rifiuti finiscono sulle strade, negli oceani, sulle spiagge, nelle foreste e nelle aree naturali d’Europa. E ogni anno milioni di cittadini europei partecipano ad azioni volontarie per ripulire i propri quartieri. “Ripuliamo l’Europa!” è un’iniziativa coordinata dalla Settimana europea per la riduzione dei rifiuti che intende promuovere queste azioni e far capire l’entità del problema, incoraggiando le persone a modificare i propri comportamenti.

Cada año, millones de toneladas de basura terminan en las calles, los océanos, las playas, los bosques y las zonas naturales europeas y, cada año, millones de europeos salen voluntariamente a limpiar su barrio. «Limpiemos Europa» es una iniciativa que tiene por objeto fomentar más actuaciones de ese tipo a fin de dar a conocer el alcance del problema de la basura y los residuos y promover cambios de comportamiento. La iniciativa está coordinada por la Semana Europea de la Prevención de Residuos.

Und jedes Jahr sind Millionen europäische Bürger in ihrem Viertel unterwegs, um freiwillig bei Reinigungsaktionen mitzumachen. Mit der Initiative „Let's Clean up Europe“ (Frühjahrsputz in Europa) soll dafür geworben werden, mehr solcher Aktionen durchzuführen, um für das Ausmaß des Verschmutzungs- und Abfallproblems zu sensibilisieren und Verhaltensänderungen zu bewirken.

Et chaque année, des millions d’Européens vont nettoyer leur quartier dans le cadre d’actions de bénévolat. L’initiative «Let’s Clean up Europe» vise à promouvoir davantage ce type d’actions, à sensibiliser à l’ampleur du problème des déchets (sauvages) et à encourager un changement de comportement. Cet événement est coordonné par la semaine européenne de la réduction des déchets.

Every year, millions of tonnes of litter end up in Europe's streets, oceans, beaches, forests and natural areas. And every year millions of Europeans get out in their neighborhoods to clean up in voluntary actions. "Let's Clean up Europe" is an initiative that aims to encourage more such actions, to raise awareness about the scale of the litter and waste problems, and to encourage changes in behaviour. The event is being coordinated by the European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR).
