Lionfish problem in Kaş

updates

Lionfish invasion has started in 2016 in Kaş. At first, we were excited to see a new species in our waters, but soon we realized that this explosion of lionfish population in Kaş was going to cause big problems in tilting the delicate balance of the local eco system.

Now, we encounter many lionfish in every dive we make, as opposed to just 1 or 2 in 2016-17.

As Kaş is a Marine Protection area, we can not apply some of the practices used in other places of the world which encounter the same problem. However, there are still some measures we can take and we started applying them. We are urging the local fishermen to catch as many lionfish as possible and sell them to the local restaurants. We have provided the restaurants with different recipes. It is a slow process but better than doing nothing.

We hope that in the near future local authorities allow for more effective solutions.
